Seven tips to keep Jesus our main thing during the busy, hot summer months

1. Stay determined to get daily quiet time in.
It doesn’t have to be a long period. Just taking 15 minutes (we can all find 15 minutes!) a day can make all the difference in the world in attitude, perspective, and the next steps. If it’s helpful, get an accountability partner to keep you on track.

If you have time to do one thing in the morning before walking out the door, make prayer and scripture that one thing. This will bring more value to you than anything else you could spend those few minutes doing.

2. Use 3×5 scripture cards.
At the start of each week, pick one verse (from Sunday service works well) to focus on throughout the week. Put the verse on a 3×5 card (a piece of paper/sticky note works just fine) and place it where you must see it daily. (Bathroom mirror is a great spot). Use the verse as you feel led – pray, memorize, and praise God.

3. Learn to say no.
Don’t take on more than you need. Typically, summer has its extra activities. If someone asks you to take on a responsibility, remember that you always want to give your best if taking on the responsibility will cause stress and less than your best – don’t do it if you can avoid it. Another great place for an accountability partner is if you tend to say “yes” before thinking things through.

4. Give yourself grace.
When the heat rises, so do tempers. Whether it’s the tempers of others or ourselves, do all you can to seek peace, own what is yours (make amends if needed), and have a forgiving heart.

If you are tired, so are others. If you are going through stressful times, so are others. If you could use more time in your day, so can others. Grant yourself grace, and remember to grant others grace.

5. Enjoy!
Whatever you find yourself involved in, enjoy what’s in front of you – especially times of rest. And, consider, if you aren’t enjoying whatever it is, maybe it shouldn’t be in front of you.

6. Seek God first in the decision.
When it comes to decisions, ask yourself – “What would I do if I trusted God in this?”

7. Ask for help
Don’t try to do everything yourself. Receive the gift of allowing others to help you.
