To Solomon, the presence of God was both assuring and unsettling.  How assuring his promises were (see 1 Kings 9:1:5), how unsettling his warnings (see 1 Kings 9:6-9).

But both are necessary.  We need assurance.  Contrary to what we like, we also need unsettling.  We need them both in balance.

To assured, and we can become complacent. Too unsettled, and we can become anxious.

We need the promises of God to guide us hopefully, forward, and we need the warnings of God to keep us from hopelessly losing our way. ~ Bible Commentary on 1 Kings 9

Journal prompts:

  • What do you think about the idea that we need unsettling in our lives?
  • What in your life do you find both assuring and unsettling?
  • How do you see that both, in balance, are a good thing?
